Heritage Copper Roof Restoration: St John’s Uniting Church

St John’s church complex, which was built between 1929 and 1930 in the Sydney suburb of Wahroonga in the Ku-ring-gai Council local government area of New South Wales, Australia, is a rare and excellent example of a church complex, including halls and ancillary facilities, being designed and built as a whole, with the scale and detailing of the buildings clearly reflecting the hierarchy of spaces within.

In the Wahroonga community, its original terracotta tile roof with copper guttering and copper roofs has stood out.

Scope Of Work

  • The church has terracotta roof tiles with copper valleys and copper box gutters, as well as copper roofs, which required heritage roof repairs.

 

  • Replace the copper valleys on existing tile roofs with new 0.6mm copper sheeting, including an internal divider to keep water from crossing to the other roof; this required folding copper with a custom high centre fold to keep storm water down to gutters.

 

  • Install copper valleys in 6m sections with fixing clips and copper nails at the head of each section to prevent movement down the roof.

 

  • Install new copper box gutters to the rear brick walls, with 0.6mm copper folded to suit the roof pitch and soldered stop ends and corner junctions to heritage roofing standards, followed by new 20kg/m2 lead sheeting installed as cover flashings into the brick walls to seal the roof.

 

  • Copper roofs were installed in standing seam detail on front dormer flat roofs, with an underlay below copper roof sheeting and secured with internal stainless-steel clips.

 

  • Install new external copper gutter brackets and copper gutters around the church building. To ensure longevity, all copper gutter corners and stop ends were soldered in accordance with heritage roofing standards.

 

  • Install 100mm copper down pipes close to ground level from copper gutters using handmade hand built offsets with soldered joints. Each copper downpipe was handcrafted to fit the walls. At ground level, new cast iron inspection openings were installed to protect down pipes and allow  access to the storm water system.

 

  • Existing cast iron downpipes were treated and painted before being reattached to brick walls with new fittings.
